Ammonia Reduction Through Bioaugmentation - Domestic
Wastewater Lagoon
Biological
Treatment Summary
The Situation
A domestic wastewater lagoon was
facing compliance problems with levels of ammonia
leaving the lagoon. Discharge levels were averaging 14
mg/L with highs in the low 20's. Their discharge permit
levels were 2.0. The lagoon was receiving notices of
violation from the state's regulatory agency.
The Solution
A proposed bioaugmentation program
that consisted of the addition of Aquaculture to
the wastewater lagoon. It was proposed that an initial
seed application be performed followed by regular weekly
maintenance applications.
The Results
Prior to the start of treatment, the
ammonia level was 16.3 mg/L. Twenty-four (24) hours
after the initial seed application, ammonia levels were
measured to be below 2 mg/L.
Today, almost two years later, the
ammonia levels in the lagoon are constantly below 1
mg/L.
The lagoon continues to follow a
maintenance program utilizing Aquaculture with ammonia
levels approaching non-detectable.
