Ammonia/Nitrate/Nitrite Reduction - Nitrogen
Plant
Biological
Treatment Summary
The Situation
A major nitrogen manufacturing plant
wanted to control ammonia/nitrate/nitrite levels in a
wastewater lagoon. The lagoon receives all plant
wastewater and run off water from the facility. The
lagoon is also utilized to receive the manufacturing
plant upset water as well as storm water. Ammonia levels
in this lagoon ran as high as 40mg/L.
The Solution
A proposed bioaugmentation
program that consisted of the addition of
Aquaculture. It was proposed that an initial seed
application be performed followed by regular weekly
maintenance applications.
The Results
Ammonia/nitrate/nitrite levels dropped
to all time lows. The levels were also noted to drop
faster following plant upsets, rainfalls, etc. as
compared to historical data.
The ammonia levels today run at
non-detectable readings. The plant personnel now send
upset water to the lagoon with "an all-new confidence".
Because of the success of Aquaculture, the plant is currently expanding its
ammonia/nitrate/nitrite reduction program utilizing Aquaculture to include other areas in the upcoming
season.
