Ammonia Reduction In Trickling Filter
Domestic Wastewater Treatment Facility
Biological
Treatment Summary
The Situation
A major municipality faced the problem
of elevated levels of ammonia in its discharge water. In
order to meet regulatory limits the facility had to
divert its wastewater to a neighboring municipality at a
very large expense.
The Solution
In conjunction with
the facility, an in-plant, full scale
feasibility study to determine the effects of Aquaculture on ammonia reduction when applying
Aquaculture in their trickling filters only.
The Results
The project data clearly demonstrated
the ability of Aquaculture to reduce the ammonia
levels when the trickling filters were treated. Due to
the treatment program the facility was able to
treat a larger volume of water and keep the discharge
water within regulatory permit levels.
The treatment program will
save the facility hundreds of thousands of dollars by
the facilities ability to treat more wastewater on-site
versus the costs of diverting the wastewater to another
facility.
